Five Characteristics of Good Writing The basic characteristics of good writing promoted by educators in English-speaking countries are: unity, (1) , emphasis, development and clarity. However, in this lecture good writing is defined in different terms. They are: I. Good thinking A. Good writing should be substantive and (2) . B. Good writing is not good grammar or vice versa. C. The possible reasons for a piece of exciting writing 1. It enlightens you or sheds light on the subject. 2. You have felt something similar but in a rather vague and superficial way. 3. You have felt exactly the same, but have never been able to express yourself in such an (3) manner. II . Thoughtful revision A. The geniuses producing great writings without any revision are few and far between. B. The majority of writers create good writing based on ninety-nine percent hard work and one percent (4) . III. Directed toward an audience A. “Audience” refers to (5) . B. The intended audience determines choice of words, sentence length and patterns, (6) , the details included in your writing, etc. IV. Achieving a clear purpose Good writing must achieve your (7) purpose. V. (8) A. Good writing should be precise, concise, and lucid prose. B.
