Libraries play an important role in our lives. Now, there’s even a law that can help us better enjoy the services that libraries provide. China’s first national public library law has gone into effect ( 生效 ) since Jan 1, 2018. According to the new law, public libraries should provide free services, such as lending books and data inquiries ( 数据询问 ), providing public spaces, organizing public lectures and so on. Public libraries should be open on weekends and official holidays, and public libraries should also have children’s reading areas. At the same time, libraries will better serve the public with the help of reforms. “We are working on building a full list of book collections for all libraries throughout the country. That will make it easier for readers to get the books they want,” Han Yongjin, curator of the National Library of China said, “We are also working on ways to make ancient classic literature more ‘alive’ for modern readers.” These are parts of the efforts to promote ( 促进 ) reading among Chinese people, as China still falls behind in reading rates ( 率 ) compared with major western countries. A national survey showed that Chinese adults read 3.21 e-books and 4.65 paper books on average ( 平均 ) in 2016, compared with an average of 16 books in Europe and the United States. Luckily, more efforts have been made to encourage a love of reading in all people.
