After all of this, the narrator feels awful but is called in to make his speech. As the crowd's applause and laughter subsides, he determinedly begins, choking back blood and spit. His speech is about the importance of education. He recites a story about a ship lost at sea for many days whose passengers suddenly sight a friendly vessel which tells the "unfortunate vessel" to "cast down your ____where you are."
