中国的戏曲起源于原始的（），后来巫术盛行，以舞降神，逐渐演变为民间歌舞和小调。古代在每年腊月还举行一种驱鬼逐疫的仪式，叫做“（）”或“（）”。由四个人头戴面具，身穿，手执戈盾，口中发出傩傩之声，这叫“（）”；或由十二人画衣，手执，甩动作响，高呼各种专吃恶鬼的神名，这叫“（）”，以后逐渐演变为戏曲，就叫“傩戏”。古代还有一些专门以乐舞戏谑为职业的人，在天子、诸侯设宴一些乐舞滑稽表演，这些人叫作“（）”、“（）”。以上这些乐舞，看作是戏曲的起源。
