Waste disposal Waste material must never be allowed to accumulate in the laboratory; it should be removed regularly from the working area for storage in suitable containers so that it can be disposed of appropriately. There should be separate bins with properly fitting lids for broken glassware and for inflammable materials such as paper or cloths which may have been used to mop up inflammable liquids. Waste solids should be placed in bins provided (toxic solids can be sealed in plastic bags first) and waste solvents should be placed in suitable containers appropriately labelled, but indiscriminate mixing of contaminated solvents should be avoided. Halogenated solvents in particular should be kept apart from other solvents and may with advantage be purified for reuse.
